studio monitors

Our main monitors. Altec 620 cabinets we built in plywood, with Great Plains Audio 604-8H-III coaxials, Rick Craig crossovers and a DIY dual-mono amp.

Two tall light-plywood speaker cabinets, each with one large round driver and a slot port, standing under the studio's steel-framed window.

drivers and cabinets

The Altec 604 is a 15-inch coaxial. A compression driver fires through a horn in the middle of the woofer, so the highs and lows come from the same point. The 620 is Altec's ported cabinet for it. We built ours in plywood to the 620 design, with Great Plains Audio's 604-8H-III, the current version of the driver, and Rick Craig's passive crossovers.

Inside the amplifier from above: two toroidal transformers on the left, two amplifier boards each with four large capacitors, between finned heatsinks. The amplifier's insides from an angle, showing the two transformers and the two channel boards.
The amp, with its own transformer, board and capacitors for each channel.

amplifier

A Tombo Bliss from the diyAudio design, built dual-mono, so the two channels only share the chassis.

in the room

These are what we measured the room with. The 111 Hz notch that's left comes from the front wall, so next we move them.
