The studio: a modular case and a synth on a stand at left, a desk with a laptop and a channel-strip controller, a pair of plywood speakers under a tall industrial window, and a tiered stand of drum machines and controllers at right.

Our room in Emeryville.

It's a 480 sq ft loft with brick walls, big steel windows and a 13 ft ceiling. Everything is plugged in and ready to play. Both speakers are set to the same level with pink noise.

The mix position: a laptop and a Softube Console 1 channel and fader in front of the speakers, with a plugin on the screen at right. The whole room from above and behind: roof trusses, storage shelves, the modular, the desks and the tiered instrument stand. Looking toward the window past a Doepfer modular case and a synth on a stand. The full height of the room: white trusses, two banks of windows, and the tiered instrument stand side-on.

The room is 13 × 21 × 23 ft. A room this size has axial modes at 25, 27 and 43 Hz, and their harmonics pile up through the low end, so some bass notes ring longer and louder than others. We've been treating it a bit at a time and measuring after each step.

So far there are six porous absorbers, 20 in deep (R-30 fibreglass), hung 2 ft off the walls. At the mix position the T20 is now 0.3–0.5 s from 100 to 250 Hz, which is within EBU Tech 3276 for a room this size. 63 and 80 Hz still ring for 0.8–0.9 s, so those are next. The monitors are a pair of Altec 620s we built with Great Plains Audio 604-8H-III coaxials.
